Parts of the U.S. Midwest, including Illinois and Indiana, fell victim to powerful storms that resulted in multiple destructive tornadoes. These tornadoes resulted in at least two deaths and caused extensive damage, destroying homes and knocking down utility infrastructure. The severe weather hit northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana on Tuesday, producing several intense supercell thunderstorms and leading to the formation of at least four tornadoes. Emergency responders were dispatched to aid residents trapped in ruined homes, while some roads remained blocked due to debris and damaged utility poles. An elderly couple was reported dead after a tornado hit their residence in Newton County. Damage assessments are still ongoing while the National Weather Service plans to evaluate the affected areas to ascertain the number and strength of the tornadoes. The storms also resulted in unusually large hailstones, with some measuring up to six inches in diameter, possibly setting a new state record.
