Dashcam Footage Captures Alleged Rideshare Robbery Attempt in Laventille

A dashcam video that has surfaced on the internet appears to depict the entire sequence of an alleged armed robbery targeting a rideshare driver in Laventille. The footage is believed to have been recorded from cameras installed within the car, seemingly capturing the passengers entering the car, conversations during the ride, and the moments leading up to the alleged ambush.

According to police reports, the driver accepted a fare shortly after 9 p.m. last Saturday, picking up two women in the Port of Spain. During the journey, one of the passengers requested a detour to Wharton Branch Road, Laventille, to pick up an item. Upon reaching the location, one of the women exited the car, and moments later, two men approached the vehicle, one of whom was allegedly armed.

As the situation escalated, the driver reacted quickly, accelerating away from the scene. The footage reportedly shows one of the suspects being struck by the fleeing car, while another appears to fire a shot at the vehicle.

The incident has sparked an intense conversation on social media, with many expressing concern about the tactics being used to target rideshare drivers. It also emphasized the growing importance of in-car cameras, which can provide crucial evidence during criminal investigations.

Following the incident, a 19-year-old man matching the description of one of the suspects sought medical treatment at the Port of Spain General Hospital for injuries. He was subsequently detained by the police for questioning. This incident has raised concerns over a reported increase in rideshare-related robberies, with the police advising drivers to stay vigilant, especially when accepting rides to unfamiliar locations or when passengers request abrupt changes to their destinations.
