Cummings Criticizes Government’s Crime Strategy, Questions Safety of Eddie Hart Police Post

PNM MP Foster Cummings has launched a scathing critique of the government’s approach to tackling crime, accusing it of lacking a coherent strategy. In his statement titled “Crime Plan by Vaps,” Cummings claims the administration relies heavily on emergency measures and divisive political tactics rather than implementing effective crime-reduction policies.

Cummings criticized the use of rolling States of Emergency and detention orders, arguing that these measures infringe on citizens’ fundamental rights without yielding meaningful improvements in public safety. He further accused Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of employing racial rhetoric that he believes exacerbates political and racial tensions.

The MP highlighted the ongoing dispute over the proposed police post at the Eddie Hart Grounds, asserting that the opposition is not opposed to a police presence but is concerned about the government’s process. Cummings claims that the construction has proceeded without adequate consultation or adherence to planning and safety regulations, especially given the site’s proximity to a natural gas pipeline.

He emphasized that a facility meant to uphold law and order should comply with legal standards, pointing out the irony in disregarding these principles while aiming to reinforce them. The government maintains that the police post aims to enhance community security, while the opposition insists that public safety initiatives must adhere to established processes.

Cummings concluded by questioning when political theatrics would give way to effective governance, urging for a shift towards policies that genuinely address crime and public safety concerns.
