Patrice Roberts, a renowned Soca artist, has been ordered by the High Court to pay a sum of US$25,104.12 to Soca Bookings Incorporated, a Canadian entertainment company. This ruling follows a breach of contract dispute, where the claims made by the company were partially upheld by Justice Robin Mohammed. The contract in question included services such as management and financial advances during their short-lived professional relationship.
The court’s assessment determined the company was entitled to US$35,472 for services rendered and expenses incurred while advancing Roberts’ career. This included costs related to recording sessions and music video production. However, it was also found that the company had not disbursed US$10,367.88 to Roberts, which was collected from her digital music sales. Therefore, the artist is now required to pay the difference between these two amounts.
The root of the dispute can be traced back to an oral agreement made in February 2015 at the Trinidad Hilton Hotel. According to the arrangement, the company was to manage Roberts’ career in return for commission-based earnings from her performances. The agreement also entailed varying commission rates depending on performance income and payments were to become due once the venture turned profitable.
Roberts terminated the business relationship in June 2017, denying any indebtedness as she argued the company had failed to meet its obligations. In addition, she filed a counterclaim seeking compensation from her digital revenue. The court’s ruling has now settled both claims by offsetting the amounts owed between both parties.
