Cocoyea/Tarouba Councillor Teresa Lynch calls for consistent community maintenance programme Councillor for Cocoyea/Tarouba Teresa Lynch is calling on the Government to establish a consistent environmental maintenance programme, saying communities need more than periodic cleaning and clearing. Lynch raised the issue in a video shared on social media, where she expressed concern about the maintenance of public spaces and uncertainty surrounding the future of environmental programmes and the workers who depend on them. “Our communities don’t just need cleaning and clearing, they need consistent maintenance,” Lynch stated. She called on the Government to put proper systems in place to ensure communities are maintained throughout the year rather than relying on temporary or one-off initiatives. Lynch said the ending of environmental programmes has also left workers facing uncertainty about their employment and questioned what arrangements will be introduced in the new financial year. She argued that the issue goes beyond simply clearing overgrown areas, saying roadsides, highways, green spaces and other public areas require continuous maintenance. The Cocoyea/Tarouba councillor also noted that residents have already been taking responsibility for cutting and maintaining areas immediately outside their homes. However, she said responsibility for maintaining wider public spaces requires an organised and sustained approach. Lynch is now calling for clarity on what will replace the temporary programmes and for a long-term system that provides consistent maintenance for communities while addressing the employment uncertainty facing affected workers.
