Comedor Golondrinas holds weekly market to fund services and feed children Hermosillo, Sonora – The Comedor Golondrinas in the Humberto Gutiérrez neighborhood, also known as Las Cuevitas, hosts a tianguis (market) every Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to cover basic utility costs and, when needed, purchase food for the 65 children served each morning. Cocinera Celsa Paredes Lozano explained that the market is financed by selling items donated by the community. “Each month we organize a collection of clothing, shoes, kitchenware, toys and other objects, which we then sell at the tianguis,” she said. “The proceeds go toward paying for electricity and water, and occasionally we use them to buy food for the children.” The collection process begins a week before the market. Donations are gathered in a van, with pickup trips starting around 11:00 or 12:00 p.m. and continuing until 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. Paredes Lozano noted that the van makes multiple trips to transport the goods to the comedor. “We have a van, so we start collecting from 11 or 12 and keep going until the last trip, which can be the sixth one, to bring all the items to the comedor,” she said. Items sold at the tianguis are priced between 15 and 20 pesos. The current stock includes a large quantity of clothing and footwear for children, men, and women. Paredes Lozano remarked that this is the first time in the five years she has been involved with the comedor that there will be more items to sell than needed. The market is open to anyone who wishes to purchase affordable goods. Interested parties can also contact Paredes Lozano at 662‑355‑7500 for more information or to support the comedor. The funds raised help the Comedor Golondrinas cover utility expenses and, when necessary, provide meals for the children it serves each morning.
