A combat drone exploded near the Moldova-Ukraine border on Sunday, August 9, causing a fire but no casualties. The incident occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time near the village of Crocmaz in the Ștefan Vodă district.
According to preliminary information from Moldovan police, fragments of a combat drone were found at the scene. A specialized explosives team is conducting a forensic examination of the site to determine the circumstances and origin of the crash.
This incident is the latest in a series of drone crashes in Moldova. On August 5, wreckage from a Russian Geran-2 attack drone was discovered near the village of Văleni in southern Moldova’s Cahul district. Moldovan specialists identified the drone as a Geran-2, Russia’s version of the Iranian-designed Shahed long-range attack drone.
Earlier this year, in March, Moldovan authorities recovered a suspected Russian drone near the border village of Tudora, which was found to be carrying explosives. The drone crashes have occurred as Russia continues to launch large-scale bombardments against Ukraine, frequently targeting port infrastructure in the country’s south near the Moldovan and Romanian borders.
Moldovan authorities have dispatched specialized units to the site to extinguish the blaze and secure the area. A detailed investigation is ongoing, and more information is expected to be provided following a visual inspection and forensic examination.
