Coalition Clash Threatens Austria’s Child Savings Plan

**Coalition Dispute Threatens Austria’s Child Savings Initiative**

A dispute within Austria’s coalition government is jeopardising the “Future Depot” (Zukunftsdepot), a program designed to give every newborn a tax‑free savings account seeded with €500 that would grow until the child reaches adulthood.

The initiative was championed by Chancellor Christian Stocker of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP). According to the plan, the €500 would be deposited into a savings account for each newborn, with the funds accruing interest over the years until the child turns 18.

Sources indicate that disagreements between coalition partners have raised doubts about the program’s future. The coalition’s internal conflict has prompted concerns that the Future Depot may be delayed or altered before it can be implemented.

The Voice of Vienna reports that the potential collapse of the plan could affect the financial security of future generations, but no official decision has yet been announced.
