Claro Puerto Rico Brings Redundant Internet to the South with AMX-1 Submarine Cable

SAN JUAN – Claro Puerto Rico has announced the deployment of the AMX-1 submarine cable system in the southern region of the island, marking a major step toward a more resilient digital future. The cable, owned by América Móvil, will provide the first redundant international internet connection point in southern Puerto Rico, ensuring improved connectivity and backup capacity for the region.

This deployment is part of Claro’s ongoing commitment to building infrastructure that supports the island’s digital transformation. The AMX-1 system spans thousands of kilometers across the Americas, and its landing in Puerto Rico enhances the island’s integration into global networks.

Officials said the new connection will bolster internet reliability, especially during emergencies or natural disasters when primary links may be compromised. The project is expected to benefit businesses, government services, and residents alike.

Claro has not disclosed the exact location or timeline for full activation, but the announcement signals continued investment in Puerto Rico’s telecommunications landscape.

This development comes as demand for high-speed, reliable internet grows across the island, driven by remote work, education, and digital services.
