**Chinese Lecturer Charged with Murder in Gyeongsan, South Korea**
*Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province –* A Chinese university lecturer in his thirties has been detained after confessing to the killing of a 25‑year‑old Chinese student, according to South Korean police and a court hearing on Thursday.
The suspect, identified only by the surname **Jeong**, admitted to investigators that he strangled the victim in the early hours of **20 August**. Police allege that Jeong subsequently mutilated the body and disposed of parts of it. An autopsy is pending to confirm the exact time and cause of death.
**Timeline of events**
– **14 August** – The victim, a Chinese student who had been working in China, arrived in Korea to obtain documents related to her graduate degree.
– **20 August, around 2 a.m.** – Surveillance footage captured the victim outside Jeong’s studio apartment in Hayang‑eup, Gyeongsan. The video does not show Jeong forcibly entering the apartment, and the victim was not seen leaving afterward.
– **20 August, around 10:30 p.m.** – Security cameras recorded a person wearing the victim’s clothing walking toward Dongdaegu Station. Police later identified the individual as Jeong, who had allegedly taken the victim’s suitcase and cellphone, turned off the phone at the station, and returned to his home.
– **21 August** – Jeong called police to report the student missing, claiming to be her boyfriend and stating that he had not heard from her since she left for Daegu. Police are investigating the call as possible obstruction of official duties by deception.
– **21 August, 7:29 p.m.** – During a follow‑up interview, police discovered the victim’s body at Jeong’s residence and arrested him on the street in Hayang‑eup.
Following the arrest, prosecutors sought a detention warrant, citing concerns that Jeong might flee or destroy evidence. The **Daegu District Court** held a hearing on the warrant on **Thursday morning**, ultimately issuing an arrest warrant.
Jeong was employed as an outside lecturer at a graduate school in Gyeongsan that the victim also attended. Police have not yet disclosed a motive for the killing and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
