China ships 2025 passenger-car total within eight months

China exported more passenger cars in the first eight months of 2026 than it did during the entirety of 2025, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). This surge in overseas shipments reflects a significant acceleration in the export of electric and plug-in hybrid models.

Between January and August, passenger-car exports surpassed 6.2 million units, exceeding the approximately 6.04 million units exported throughout 2025. In August alone, shipments rose 67.1% compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 890,000 units.

Data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), which utilizes a different compilation methodology, reported an even higher year-on-year increase for August, with exports rising 77.5% to 894,000 units. The CPCA noted that exports of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles saw particularly rapid growth, increasing 154.7% compared to the same period last year.

The increase in exports comes as domestic passenger-car sales in China have experienced a sharp decline. Manufacturers are increasingly utilizing international markets to manage production capacity amid softer consumer demand and intense price competition within the domestic market. Companies such as BYD and Geely have reported record overseas delivery figures.

The broader vehicle export sector has consistently exceeded initial industry forecasts. Total vehicle exports surpassed one million units in a single month for the first time in June and maintained that level through July. In the first half of 2026, China exported 5.096 million vehicles, a 65.3% increase from the previous year.

New-energy vehicles have been a primary driver of this growth. During the first seven months of the year, China exported 2.909 million new-energy vehicles, more than double the volume recorded during the same period in 2025. Conventional fuel vehicles also contributed to the trend, with July exports of petrol and diesel vehicles reaching approximately 490,000 units, a 40% increase year-on-year.

Current trends have led to upward revisions in full-year projections. S&P Global Ratings anticipates that China’s passenger-vehicle exports will grow by approximately 50% to 70% this year. The CPCA has projected that total vehicle exports could reach 12 million units in 2026 if the current pace continues. These figures significantly outperform the initial forecast provided by CAAM in January, which estimated total vehicle exports of approximately 7.4 million units for the year.
