China Rare Earth Export Value Surges 61% Despite Lower Shipment Volumes

China’s export value of rare-earth ore and metals jumped 61.1% in the first half of 2026, even as shipment volumes dropped 6.4%, according to new data from the General Administration of Customs. The figures point to rising global demand and higher prices for these critical minerals used in electronics, defense, and green energy.

From January to June, China exported 30,482.841 tonnes of rare earths, down from 32,569.28 tonnes a year earlier. However, the total value soared to $308.269 million from $191.299 million in the same period of 2025.

In June alone, exports stood at 5,104.838 tonnes, valued at $64.644 million. The data underscores China’s dominant position in rare earth supply chains, with pricing power that affects industries worldwide.

The customs report also highlighted strong performance in other sectors. Exports of refined petroleum products fell 13.2% in volume but rose 14.5% in value. Medical and pharmaceutical exports grew 8.5% in volume and 12% in value. Mechanical and electrical products saw a 24.5% value increase, while high-tech exports surged 38.5% year-on-year to $604.155 billion.

Analysts say the rare earth figures could fuel further debate over resource security and trade strategies, especially as global demand for clean energy technologies accelerates.
