Chile’s Megaproject Given Green Light: ‘Reform of Cuts’ Sparks Outrage

Chile’s government has secured approval for a massive financial and tax megaproject, a move that critics are calling a “reform of cuts” that leaves the country exposed. The initiative, promoted by the administration of President José Antonio Kast, was passed with the support of right-wing, far-right, and Partido de la Gente lawmakers.

The approval came after heated debate in Congress, where opponents argued the project prioritizes austerity over social welfare. “Chile acaba de quedar al descampado,” one critic said, warning that the country is now vulnerable to economic shocks.

The megaproject includes sweeping tax changes and financial restructuring, aimed at stimulating growth but at the cost of public services, according to detractors. Supporters, however, tout it as a necessary step to modernize the economy.

The political fallout is expected to continue, with opposition parties vowing to challenge the law’s implementation. The decision marks a defining moment for the Kast administration, which has staked its credibility on this reform.
