A five-year-old in Enterprise sparked a fire at his family home on Sunday evening after playing with a cigarette lighter. The incident took place around 7:20 pm in a studio-style apartment on Railway Street, Clarke Road, Chaguanas. The young boy accidentally ignited a mattress with the lighter. His mother, noticing the fire, promptly alerted the Chaguanas Fire Services. The firefighters, arriving with several units, successfully put out the fire before it could spread further. The fire damaged two mattresses, the kitchen area—including a stove, fridge, and cupboards—and part of the roof. The apartment’s floor was also flooded due to the firefighting efforts. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. The house, although equipped with electricity and running water, was not insured. The exact cost of the damages is yet to be determined as crime scene investigators are set to inspect the site.
