# Pathfinder Marches On After Shoe Sole Falls Off as Farley’s Vehicle Refuses to Start

Two unexpected moments during Trinidad and Tobago’s 64th Independence celebrations became the centre of Chief Secretary Farley Augustine’s message about perseverance and the determination to keep moving despite setbacks.

Augustine recounted that his official vehicle refused to start as he prepared for the day’s activities.

Attempts were made to jump-start the vehicle, even using jumper cables bearing the symbolic national colours of black and red, but the vehicle still would not start.

The situation provided a humorous beginning to Augustine’s Independence Day reflection, but another incident involving a young Pathfinder offered a much stronger demonstration of the message he wanted to deliver.

While marching during the Independence parade, the sole of the Pathfinder’s shoe came completely off.

Despite the damaged footwear, the youngster did not stop.

He continued marching.

Augustine drew attention to the contrast: an official vehicle equipped with machinery, assistance and even black-and-red jumper cables could not be made to move, while a young Pathfinder with the sole missing from his shoe found the determination to continue forward.

“Sometimes machinery will fail you. Sometimes the sole might even come off your shoe. But keep moving,” Augustine told the audience.

The Chief Secretary used the incidents as a metaphor for Trinidad and Tobago’s continuing journey as an independent nation.

“Independence is not simply about having the freedom to start when you want. It is about having the capacity and the determination to move when you must,” he said.

The black-and-red jumper cables added an almost fitting Independence Day symbolism to the vehicle mishap. Despite carrying the colours associated with Trinidad and Tobago’s national identity, they could not get the vehicle moving.

The Pathfinder, however, needed no such assistance.

With the sole of his shoe gone, he simply kept marching.

For Augustine, the two moments illustrated a broader message: independence does not guarantee that everything will work as planned. Difficulties will arise and circumstances may fail, but resilience is demonstrated by the determination to continue.

As Trinidad and Tobago marked 64 years of Independence, the young Pathfinder’s decision to keep marching despite his damaged shoe became a simple but powerful representation of that message.
