A simple social media post highlighting a Chaguanas popcorn vendor has sparked an overwhelming show of support, with scores of customers coming forward to praise not only his popcorn, but his generosity, humility and customer service.
The vendor, referred to as Matthew by at least one customer, attracted attention after TrinGlobe Media highlighted the sizeable bag of popcorn being sold for just $6 in Chaguanas.
The post quickly gained hundreds of reactions, with customers flooding the comments to share their experiences.
While many declared his popcorn among the best in Chaguanas and Central Trinidad, a recurring theme throughout the responses was the amount customers receive for their money.
One customer explained that Matthew fills the brown popcorn bag to the brim before placing it inside a larger plastic bag and adding even more popcorn. Others similarly described the portions as generous and praised the freshness and taste.
But the strongest endorsements were reserved for the man behind the popcorn.
Customers repeatedly described him as humble, respectful, pleasant and hardworking, with several saying his customer service was one of the reasons they continued returning.
One mother said her daughters ask to stop by the popcorn vendor whenever they visit Chaguanas, while another customer said she regularly supports him whenever she is in the area.
Another commenter said she normally pays $10 and tells him to keep the change, encouraging others to support someone earning an honest living.
Some customers said they have been buying from him for years, while others described him simply as “the best popcorn man in the land.”
The reaction also prompted a wider conversation about supporting small businesses and people who make an honest living. One commenter pointed to the vendor as an example of someone creating an opportunity for himself, while another simply urged the public to “support local small business.”
For Matthew, what may have been another ordinary day selling popcorn in Chaguanas unexpectedly became a public appreciation moment.
And judging by the response from his customers, the $6 price may have attracted the attention — but his generous portions, good popcorn and service with a smile are what earned their loyalty.
Editor’s note: The vendor was identified as “Matthew” by a commenter familiar with him; his full name has not been independently confirmed.
