Chaguanas Chamber Backs US-Trinidad Security Cooperation Amid Crime Concerns

The Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CCIC) has expressed support for strengthened security cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and the United States, in an effort to combat organised crime and enhance national safety. The business community, led by Chamber President Baldath Maharaj, has been grappling with challenging conditions due to criminal activity and continuous States of Emergency. Businesses are facing a ‘crime tax’, with increased spending on security measures amid reduced customer traffic and altered operating hours. The CCIC suggests that enhanced international cooperation could bolster intelligence, border protection, and law enforcement in the region. While the Chamber supports decisive action against crime, it also underlines that emergency measures alone are not a long-term solution. The CCIC advocates for sustained policies focusing on intelligence-led policing, strong legislation, and better agency coordination. The Chamber emphasizes the link between safety and economic activity, hoping that increased cooperation and strategic planning will restore confidence and foster a secure environment for commerce. The CCIC also urges for ongoing dialogue among the government, private sector, and other stakeholders to implement security measures that protect public safety and economic activity.
