The Caribbean Community (Caricom) Chair and Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, is scheduled to visit Trinidad and Tobago this week amid growing regional tensions. The visit is to meet with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and senior government officials. The diplomatic tension between Trinidad and Tobago and several Caricom members has been escalating, with Persad-Bissessar criticising Caricom for what she perceives as its unreliability and dysfunction. Dr Drew, who assumed the chairmanship earlier this year, will be accompanied by Caricom Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett. The visit is part of Dr Drew’s approach to engage directly with leaders of member states. Dr Drew is keen to discuss shared issues and concerns with Trinidad and Tobago’s leadership during this sensitive time that requires composed leadership and renewed commitment to regional collaboration.
