Amid rising regional tensions, CARICOM Chair Dr. Terrance Drew is slated to officially visit Trinidad and Tobago this week. The purpose of the visit is to engage in discussions with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her administration. Persad-Bissessar has recently voiced her dissatisfaction with CARICOM, labelling the regional body as dysfunctional and unreliable in its interaction with Trinidad and Tobago. CARICOM has affirmed that Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett will accompany Dr. Drew. This visit forms part of the Chair’s plan to facilitate face-to-face dialogues with regional leaders. Just last week, Dr. Drew and Dr. Barnett convened with the newly appointed Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Godwin Friday, in Kingstown.
