Caricom Affirms Strong Ties with T&T on Independence Anniversary

Caricom congratulates Trinidad and Tobago on 63rd independence, lauding achievements, culture, and enduring regional partnership.

Article:
The Caribbean Community (Caricom) has reaffirmed its enduring partnership with Trinidad and Tobago as the nation marks 63 years of independence.

In her congratulatory message to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Caricom Secretary General Dr Carla Barnett began by commending T&T’s remarkable contributions to the region’s cultural identity. She highlighted how the country’s music and literature continue to shape Caribbean pride and inspire generations across the diaspora.

Barnett then acknowledged T&T’s economic progress, citing its pivotal role in the energy and manufacturing sectors, which have long positioned the nation as a driver of regional growth.

Moving to matters of governance, she praised Trinidad and Tobago’s longstanding leadership within Caricom since its founding in 1973. In particular, she underscored the country’s responsibilities in Energy and Security in the Caricom quasi-Cabinet, noting that this reflects the trust and reliance of its regional partners.

Barnett also pointed to Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to democracy and transparency, recalling Caricom’s deployment of an Election Observation Mission during the General Elections earlier this year.

Her message built toward a clear affirmation: the relationship between Trinidad and Tobago and Caricom “remains strong,” founded on integration, cooperation, and shared values.

She closed with warm wishes to the Government and people of Trinidad and Tobago, urging continued progress and unity as the nation celebrates its 63rd year of independence.

Trinidad and Tobago became an independent nation on August 31, 1962, and has been a founding member of Caricom ever since. This year’s independence anniversary will be observed on Sunday with national celebrations across the country.
