Caribbean Music Icon Oscar B Passes Away, Leaving a Legacy of Over Four Decades

The Caribbean music world is in mourning following the loss of one of its most beloved figures. Oscar Dennis Benjamin, known to many as Oscar B, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that spans over four decades in the soca and calypso music industry. A native of Signal Hill, Tobago, Oscar B began his musical odyssey in 1982 with the Signal Hill Alumni Choir, eventually becoming a household name as the lead vocalist for the renowned Jamaican band, Byron Lee and the Dragonaires.

During his 18-year tenure with the iconic band, Oscar B became a familiar face across the Caribbean, his powerful voice resonating in popular hits like ‘Soca Butterfly’ and ‘Soca Tatie’. Following his successful stint with the Dragonaires, he formed his band, Oscar B and Vibes, continuing to enchant audiences across the region while championing Trinidad and Tobago’s vibrant culture through his music.

Even after his time with the Dragonaires, Oscar B remained a vital figure in the local music scene. His career stretched into 2026, with his participation in competitions such as Kaiso Karavan and Young Kings, his song ‘AI vs Man’ being a notable entry. Tragically, his passing comes on the heels of a severe stroke, which spurred a wave of support and fundraising initiatives for his medical care.

The loss of Oscar B has triggered an outpouring of tributes on social media, with many remembering him for not only his extraordinary talent but also his infectious personality and passionate dedication to Caribbean music. His influence, however, was not limited to Trinidad and Tobago. Oscar B earned respect and admiration far beyond his home, solidifying his status as one of the Caribbean’s most esteemed entertainers. His music and the joy it brought to countless audiences worldwide will undoubtedly live on, as will the inspiration it provided to generations of performers.
