Career Ladder Appearance Ends in Belize Jail for Missing Trinidadian Man

A Trinidad and Tobago man who appeared on a popular YouTube show claiming to oversee a US$125 million project has become the centre of an international mystery that ended not with a rescue, but with an arrest.

Forty-seven-year-old Rubindra Dale Rampersad travelled to Belize to appear on Career Ladder, a YouTube guessing game where contestants give clues about their professions for the host to identify. During the episode, Rampersad described himself as a procurement specialist managing a US$125 million project, leaving viewers intrigued.

But weeks later, concern grew after Rampersad was reported missing in Trinidad and Tobago. The host of Career Ladder also took to social media, appealing for information on his whereabouts after losing contact with him.

The mystery took a dramatic turn when Belizean police revealed Rampersad had not disappeared.

Police allege he stayed at the Golden Bay Hotel in Belize City for nearly a month before attempting to leave the country without paying a hotel bill reportedly worth almost BZ$11,000. Authorities say he was intercepted at the airport on May 29, charged with making off without payment, and remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

Rampersad, however, disputes the allegations. He says he travelled to Belize for a procurement opportunity linked to the Millennium Challenge Account and claims he became financially stranded after promised relocation assistance did not materialise. Those claims have not been independently verified and remain separate from the charges before the Belizean courts.

What started as a chance to showcase his professional credentials on YouTube has now become the subject of headlines across Belize and Trinidad and Tobago.
