Car dealers block Kwashieman footbridge walkway, exposing pedestrians to danger

Pedestrians in Accra are facing significant safety risks at the Kwashieman footbridge as roadside car dealers have encroached upon the walkway leading to the structure. The dealers, who operate along the George Walker Bush Highway (N1), have parked vehicles for sale across nearly half of the pedestrian path, obstructing access to the bridge. The obstruction has forced pedestrians to navigate narrow gaps, pushing many toward the edge of the busy highway. Residents report that the situation is particularly hazardous during peak hours, as the reduced space makes it difficult for schoolchildren, the elderly, and individuals carrying heavy loads to pass safely. Consequently, some pedestrians have opted to cross the high-speed highway directly rather than navigate the obstructed walkway, increasing the risk of accidents. The footbridge was originally constructed to provide a secure crossing point and protect commuters from fast-moving traffic on the N1. Concerned citizens are now calling on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the Ghana Highway Authority, and local law enforcement to intervene. They are urging authorities to remove the vehicles and implement regular enforcement measures to ensure the walkway remains clear and accessible for its intended purpose. Residents warned that without immediate action, the continued encroachment could lead to preventable accidents and loss of life.
