Candice Scott Turns 46: From Olympic Hammer Throw Champion to UWI Fitness Mentor

Today, 46‑year‑old Candice Henrietta Scott celebrates her birthday. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, the former hammer‑throw champion has become a national icon.

Scott first made headlines at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where she finished ninth in the hammer throw final with 69.94 m—setting a Trinidad and Tobago record and a U.S. collegiate record in the process. Her 71.45‑metre best, set in Marietta in 2005, remains the national record.

Beyond the Olympics, she has been a World Championship finalist twice, a Pan American bronze medalist in 2003, and a double gold‑medalist at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in 2005 and 2008. She also collected NCAA titles with the Florida Gators and was named Sportswoman of the Year in 2003.

After hanging up her throwing hammer, Scott transitioned to fitness, guiding students as an Aqua Aerobics and Ai Chi instructor and gym trainer at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus. Her dedication to sport continues to inspire the next generation of Trinidad and Tobago athletes.
