Canadian women’s volleyball team sweeps Puerto Rico in Olympic qualifier opener

**Canada Defeats Puerto Rico to Open NORCECA Olympic Qualifier**

*August 28, 2026 – Santo Domingo* – The Canadian women’s volleyball team began its campaign in the NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualifier with a straight‑sets victory over Puerto Rico on Friday. The win, 25‑16, 25‑22, 25‑10, positions Canada to secure an Olympic berth in its next match on Saturday.

In the three‑set match, Canada outperformed Puerto Rico in several statistical categories: 42 attacks to 32, four service aces to two, and a 12‑2 advantage in blocks. The Canadians also capitalised on opponent errors, converting 17 points from Puerto Rico’s mistakes compared with 12 for Canada.

Kiera Van Ryk led the Canadian side with 20 points, comprising 13 attacks, three blocks and four aces. “I think we came into this game prepared, but also with a lot of excitement with what’s at stake,” Van Ryk said after the match. “Once we settled in, we were able to get the job done and we are focused on tomorrow’s match and the ultimate goal of the tournament.”

Head coach Giovanni Guidetti praised his squad’s mental resilience, noting that the team maintained confidence even when Puerto Rico briefly led in the second set. “We are where we want to be and we’re looking forward to another great and difficult match on Saturday,” Guidetti said.

Canada’s next opponent will be the winner of the Dominican Republic versus Cuba match, also scheduled for Saturday. A victory in that encounter would clinch Canada’s ticket to the 2028 Olympic Games.
