Cameroon Set Up Quarter-Final Clash With Nigeria After Cape Verde Stalemate

Cameroon has secured the top spot in Group D of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 after a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde in their final group-stage match in Casablanca on Thursday.

The result means Cameroon will face defending champions Nigeria in the quarter-finals. Cape Verde, meanwhile, earned its first-ever point in its maiden TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON appearance.

The match saw Cape Verde threaten first, with Ivania Moreira missing a golden opportunity in the 19th minute. Cameroon then took the lead nine minutes later, with Naomi Ndjoah Eto providing the assist for Grace Mendoua to score with a superb first-time effort.

Cape Verde leveled the match five minutes into the second half, with Moreira making amends for her earlier miss. Cameroon thought they had restored their lead soon after, but a VAR review ruled out the goal due to a foul in the build-up.

The match opened up in the closing stages, with both sides searching for a winner. Ndjoah Eto led a rapid counterattack but her low effort was saved, while Cape Verde’s Alivia Kelly was denied by a well-struck effort that was parried to safety in the dying moments.

The final whistle confirmed a share of the spoils, with Cameroon finishing top of Group D with seven points from their three matches. They will now face Nigeria in the quarter-finals on Saturday, while Cape Verde bows out of the tournament with a memorable first point in their debut.
