**Mekong River Flooding Impacts Over 13,000 Families in Cambodia**
*Kratie Province, Cambodia – August 26, 2026* – Heavy flooding along the Mekong River has forced thousands of families to seek higher ground in four provinces of eastern Cambodia. According to Soth Kim Kolmony, spokesperson for the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), the flood has affected 13,688 families, with 1,551 families having evacuated to safer locations.
The provinces most severely hit are Kratie, Tboung Khmum, Stung Treng, and Kampong Cham. The flooding began on Friday, August 23, after the region experienced the aftermath of Typhoon Saudel, which brought sustained heavy rains and raised water levels in the Mekong River.
Images captured on August 24 show monks navigating a boat through flood‑water in Kratie province, illustrating the extent of the inundation. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and coordinate relief efforts, urging residents in low‑lying areas to move to higher ground and to follow guidance from disaster‑management officials.
The NCDM has not yet released an estimate of property damage or the number of individuals directly affected, but the displacement of over a thousand families underscores the scale of the emergency. Relief agencies are mobilizing resources to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to those displaced.
No casualties have been reported in the latest update. Officials advise that the public remain vigilant as water levels are expected to stay high in the coming days.
