Calabar awards ceremony to honour alumni, students and support school fundraising

The Calabar Old Boys’ Association will recognise distinguished alumni, outstanding students and service to the school at its 2026 Cocktail Party and Awards Ceremony on Saturday evening, with Delano Seiveright serving as patron.

According to the Jamaica Observer, the ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm at The University of the West Indies Regional Headquarters. It will also draw attention to three fundraising priorities supporting student welfare and the institution’s development.

Seiveright, a Calabar Old Boy, is minister of state in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce and member of parliament for St Andrew North Central. He welcomed the recognition of alumni achievements and encouraged former students to use their relationships and resources to assist the school and its students.

Businessman and former member of parliament Hugh Graham, academic Dr Jermaine McCalpin and Fair Trading Commission Executive Director David Miller are among those receiving the Reverend Ernest Price Award. Long-serving educator Loris Fox will receive the Reverend David Davis Award.

The President’s Award will recognise Deanall Barnes, Howard James, Wayne Strachan and Sonia “Dawn” Broderick-Brown for their service to the Calabar community. Four students—Alex Edwards, Omarc Gordon, Justin Wallace and Ras-Elijah Beckford—will also be honoured for outstanding academic performance.

Dr Michael Abrahams, an obstetrician and gynaecologist, will deliver the keynote address. Sports administrator Michael Fennell will serve as master of ceremonies, while association president Major Desmon Brown will give the welcome address. Owen “Blakka” Ellis will provide entertainment, and George Roper will serve as orator for the awards presentations.

The fundraising programme includes the Dervan Malcolm Journalism Scholarship, established in honour of the late broadcaster and Calabar Old Boy. It also includes the PTA-led Breakfast Programme, which provides students with meals three days each week, and the establishment of a Calabar Endowment Fund for long-term development and student welfare.

The ceremony brings those practical needs together with recognition of the 114-year-old school’s achievements. Seiveright said alumni support through scholarships, mentorship and direct assistance could help students whose financial resources and opportunities differ.
