Tensions escalated in the Mudzi-Mpela neighborhood of Bunia, Ituri, on the morning of Sunday, September 20, following reports of gunfire near the Kigonze displacement site. Residents reported hearing the first shots at approximately 4:00 a.m.
Multiple witnesses have reported casualties, including deaths and injuries, as well as instances of looting and arrests. One witness stated that a man in his forties was fatally shot near his home, while other sources suggested the death toll could be as high as two people. These figures have not been officially confirmed by authorities.
Residents remaining inside the site reported that access to medical care for the injured has been restricted. Witnesses observed members of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) present both inside and around the perimeter of the displacement site as of 10:00 a.m.
Local accounts describe incidents of property damage, including broken doors, and the theft of money, mobile phones, and merchandise from shops within the area. The urban commander of the Congolese National Police declined to provide specific details regarding the incident, stating that operations were still ongoing.
