India’s Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, has called for the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi to serve as a platform for strengthening cooperation between India and China. In an opinion piece published in the Chinese newspaper Global Times on September 10, the ambassador emphasized that a stable and predictable relationship between the two nations is essential for global peace and prosperity.
Ambassador Doraiswami stated that the summit offers a valuable opportunity to address mutual concerns, including trade, connectivity, climate action, public health, and the digital economy. He noted that such collaboration would contribute to a more balanced and equitable global order.
Reflecting on diplomatic engagements from the previous year, the ambassador cited a statement made by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which the Chinese leader described India and China as cooperation partners rather than rivals. Doraiswami characterized this perspective as consistent with the historical relationship between the two civilizations.
The ambassador underscored that maintaining peace and tranquility in border areas remains a fundamental requirement for the bilateral partnership. He advocated for a relationship guided by mutual respect, sensitivity, and interest, suggesting that natural differences between the two countries should be managed to prevent them from escalating into disputes.
In his commentary, Doraiswami also highlighted India’s recent economic and social progress, noting the country’s consistent growth rate of approximately 7 percent. He pointed to achievements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, including the expansion of rural electrification, increased access to banking services, and advancements in the nation’s technology and innovation sectors.
The Chinese government has expressed support for India’s role as the host of this year’s BRICS leaders’ summit, which is expected to be attended by President Xi Jinping.
