Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed several world leaders to the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12, 2026, as India hosts the 18th BRICS Summit. The two-day event, which concludes on September 13, is being held under the theme, Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.
Among those received by Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar were Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
During the summit, representatives from the BRICS nations are scheduled to participate in a closed session focused on inclusive global governance and the strengthening of multilateralism. Attendees are also expected to visit the Bharat Innovates Exhibition.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Modi conducted bilateral meetings with several leaders. In discussions with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, the two leaders addressed cooperation in defense, investment, critical minerals, clean energy, and healthcare. Prime Minister Modi described the meeting as an effort to take the existing friendship between the two nations into new frontiers. Additionally, the Prime Minister met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss the expansion of defense partnerships and bilateral investments.
The BRICS grouping currently consists of 11 member nations: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. India’s chairship for 2026 aims to foster cooperation among these diverse members amid global challenges, including economic fragmentation, geopolitical uncertainty, and climate change.
