In a turn of events earlier this evening, Christopher Samaroo, father of the late Joshua Samaroo, was arrested at the St Clair Police Station. Joshua Samaroo was the victim of a highly controversial police-involved shooting that took place back in January. Christopher Samaroo was reportedly at the station to address what he claimed was misinformation being circulated online about him.
Accompanying him at the time of his arrest was his attorney, Aaron Lewis. Prior to this, the pair had visited the Central Police Station in Port-of-Spain to report on certain statements made by Samaroo on a talk show. These statements were considered seditious by some, leading to an investigation by the police.
Aaron Lewis confirmed that Samaroo received a caution from senior officials before being taken into custody. He was arrested under the auspices of Regulation 11 of the Emergency Powers laws, a development that Lewis confirmed to Guardian Media.
Samaroo is expected to remain in police custody for the next 48 hours. However, in recent times, it has become common practice for the police to extend lawful detentions for an additional seven days. During this period, a Preventive Detention Order (PDO) is typically obtained and executed. Meanwhile, while Samaroo was at the station, officers had visited his Port-of-Spain home in an attempt to locate him.
