BIR Warns Public About Phishing Emails Targeting Taxpayers

BIR Warns Public About Phishing Emails Targeting Taxpayers

The Board of Inland Revenue (BIR) is warning members of the public to remain vigilant after identifying fraudulent emails designed to trick taxpayers into revealing sensitive personal and financial information.

According to the BIR, scammers are sending emails that appear to originate from the tax authority, using official-looking branding and language in an attempt to convince recipients that action is required on their tax accounts.

The fraudulent messages may request personal details, banking information, passwords or other confidential data under the guise of verifying accounts, processing refunds or resolving outstanding tax matters.

The BIR has stressed that these emails are not legitimate and is advising recipients not to respond, click on any links or download attachments contained in suspicious messages.

Officials are encouraging taxpayers to verify any communication claiming to be from the BIR by contacting the agency directly through its official channels. Individuals who believe they may have received a phishing email are urged to report it and delete the message immediately.

The tax authority is also reminding the public to remain cautious when sharing personal information online, as cybercriminals continue to use increasingly sophisticated methods to impersonate trusted organisations.

The BIR said public awareness remains one of the most effective defences against phishing scams and encouraged taxpayers to stay alert to help protect themselves from identity theft and financial fraud.
