Bhutanese groups urge Nepal and Bhutan to address refugee crisis and release political prisoners

Beldangi, Nepal and The Hague, Netherlands, 22 September 2026 — Two Bhutanese organisations have urged the governments of Nepal and Bhutan to address the ongoing refugee crisis and to release political prisoners.

The organisations, whose names were not disclosed in the brief statement, called for immediate action to resolve the displacement of Bhutanese refugees who have been living in camps in Nepal for decades.

They also demanded that Bhutan release political prisoners, citing concerns over human rights and the rule of law.

Both governments have yet to respond to the call, according to a report by Bhutan News Network.
