Belgium Dashes USA’s World Cup Dreams with 4-1 Victory, Marches into Quarterfinals

Belgium brought a bitter end to the United States’ FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a decisive 4-1 victory in the Round of 16, confirming their presence in the quarterfinals. The match took place in Seattle, where the home team struggled defensively, giving Belgium the upper hand. Belgium seized this opportunity, capitalizing on multiple American errors to gain control of the match.

Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere emerged as the star of the match, netting two goals and contributing an assist. He initiated the scoring spree, putting Belgium ahead early on. Malik Tillman revived American hopes momentarily with an exceptional free-kick, but Belgium quickly regained control.

The second half of the match posed greater challenges for the US. Goalkeeper Matt Freese’s costly mistake gave Belgium another goal, and Romelu Lukaku’s late strike solidified Belgium’s dominance. The game also marked the return of Folarin Balogun for the US following a suspension, but this became a footnote to Belgium’s disciplined performance.

With this victory, Belgium advances to the quarterfinals, setting up an enticing clash with Spain. For the US, their journey ended earlier than anticipated as defensive lapses cost them dearly against a seasoned European side. This defeat marked the exit of all three co-hosts—Canada, Mexico, and the US—from the 2026 FIFA World Cup before the quarterfinal stage, leaving the title race wide open.
