Beckles Questions Government’s Handling of Security Amid SoE

Pennelope Beckles, Opposition Leader, has voiced concerns over certain governmental actions. She expressed her unease regarding the decision to put Regiment Commanding Officer Colonel Keston Charles on an extended leave, only to call him back within a week. Beckles speculated this move was done to fast-track the promotion of Lt Col Dwayne Edwards over 12 senior officers. She also questioned the involvement, or lack thereof, of the Public Service Commission in this matter. Beckles further criticized the government’s handling of security during the current State of Emergency, citing resource shortages at the military base in Staubles Bay, where 12 high-risk prisoners are held. She claimed that the officers are not being provided with adequate rations. Beckles accused the government of trying to manipulate public perception of the prison system and warned of potential attempts to undermine independent State bodies, including the Judiciary and the President’s office.
