B.C. voters head to the polls for 1 of 3 federal byelections

**British Columbia Voters Cast Ballots in Federal Byelection**

*August 31, 2026 – Red Deer Advocate*

Voters in British Columbia went to the polls on Saturday to elect a new Member of Parliament in one of three federal byelections being held across Canada.

The riding, which has been without representation since June, became vacant after Liberal MP **Jonathan Wilkinson** was appointed Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. Wilkinson resigned his seat in the House of Commons to assume the diplomatic post, prompting the need for a by‑election.

Election officials confirmed that the British Columbia contest proceeded as scheduled, with polling stations open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time. Voters were asked to choose among the candidates nominated by the major parties and any independents on the ballot.

The outcome of the BC byelection will determine who will represent the riding in the federal parliament for the remainder of the current parliamentary term. The other two byelections are being conducted simultaneously in separate provinces, though details of those contests were not included in this report.
