The Romanian Ministry of National Defence has stated that its current missions focus on identifying navigation hazards and protecting critical infrastructure within Romania’s Exclusive Economic Zone in the Black Sea. Flights are planned and coordinated with the support of the Naval Component Command “Vice Admiral Ioan Georgescu” and in cooperation with the Maritime Coordination Center. The participation of a French aircraft contributes to deterrence operations carried out under NATO and enables joint training of Romanian and French military personnel. Romanian Naval Forces are conducting flights over the Black Sea and engaging in training and information‑exchange activities. At the same time, the forces have intensified maritime patrol missions using ships, IAR‑330 Puma Naval helicopters, and unmanned autonomous systems. The Maritime Hydrographic Directorate also transmits advisories to navigators regarding navigation hazards and recommended routes. Romanian Naval Forces and NATO partners continuously monitor the maritime situation in the area of responsibility in the Black Sea, amid threats stemming from Russia’s war against Ukraine. The mission is taking place against a backdrop of increased attacks on commercial vessels, which have heightened concerns about navigation safety in the Black Sea. According to The Guardian, the augmentation of military resources was announced following a NATO Council meeting where ambassadors discussed Black Sea security. The British journalists wrote: “In the face of the heightened number of casualties among civilian mariners, which has turned Black Sea routes into the most dangerous in the world, NATO announced that the defensive alliance will supplement surveillance means in the region.”
