On June 8th, 2026, a heartbreaking revelation was made as an autopsy confirmed that twelve-year-old Mercedez Layne died from blunt force injuries. Forensic pathologist Dr. Parthasarathi Pramanik conducted the autopsy, a day after the young schoolgirl was found dead near an oil well off Carapal Road.
The discovery was made by a worker from Trinity Exploration and Production Services, who had arrived early in the morning to carry out maintenance work. The police was immediately alerted, and officers from the South Western Division High Performance Patrol and Response Team were dispatched to the scene. Layne was found partially clothed, with visible injuries to her forehead.
Crime scene personnel were quick to secure the area and began their investigation. In addition to the grim sight of the young girl’s body, several items of potential evidentiary value were found, including a right-foot slipper, clothing items, and a broken beer bottle. As part of the forensic examination, both of Layne’s hands were also bagged.
The investigation took a turn when it was revealed that Layne was last seen alive the previous day, being placed into a purple-coloured station wagon by her grandfather. The driver, described as an African-descent man with Rastafarian-style hair, was supposed to take her home. However, she never reached her destination. Shortly after, a missing person report was filed.
The search for the missing schoolgirl ended tragically when her body was discovered. A suspect, believed to be the driver of the station wagon, is currently in custody as the investigation into Layne’s untimely death continues.
