Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) cleared the streets and sidewalks of the New Market area in the capital, installing flower beds and ornamental plant pots. The operation began at 3 p.m. on Saturday, with DSCC Administrator Bir Muktiyoddha M. Abdu Salam in attendance. The cleanup covered the stretch from Gate No. 1 near the Nilkhet intersection to Gate No. 4 adjacent to Chandrima Super‑Market, as well as the road from Priyangan Super‑Market to the Nilkhet intersection. After removing encroachments, the area was landscaped with flower and plant pots. Administrator Salam said that those occupying the roads for commercial purposes had been repeatedly asked to cease operations. He warned that if the encroachment continued, goods would be seized and strict legal action would be taken. He also urged local leaders to play a responsible role in maintaining the area. “New Market is a major commercial hub. Thousands of people come from far and wide each day to shop,” Salam said. “It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the area clean and to ensure free movement. No obstruction of public passage will be tolerated.” Regarding hawkers’ requests for reduced service charges, Salam noted that the demand had been forwarded to the relevant ministry. Once a decision is made, a list will be prepared, and no one will be allowed to occupy space outside that list.
