Cairo – Egyptian Foreign Minister Bader Abdel Atey said on Saturday that he is “extremely concerned” about any new escalation in the conflict between the United States and Iran, warning that it could lead to further destruction and serious consequences. He made the remarks during a speech at the Security Dialogue Summit, organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Manama, Bahrain. Abdel Atey said the next round of hostilities would be “more dangerous and destructive” and would not yield any results. “We must learn lessons from the past,” he added. A temporary agreement reached in June aimed at a permanent ceasefire in the war with Iran and the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has not been achieved. Since then, Iran has proposed that Washington lift its blockade on Iranian ports if Tehran restores the waterway within seven days. Egyptian mediators returned to Tehran yesterday (Friday) in a renewed attempt to reach an agreement. However, the parties remain divided over whether nuclear negotiations should precede easing the blockade and oil sanctions.
