ചേരാനല്ലൂര്‍ വാഹനാപകടക്കേസ്: നാല് പൊലീസുകാര്‍ക്ക് സസ്‌പെന്‍ഷന്‍

In the Cheranelloor accident case, a Mercedes‑Benz vehicle collided with a middle‑aged man, resulting in his death. Police officials at the Ernakulam Cheranelloor Police Station were accused of failing to file a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the incident. In response, four officers were suspended: Senior Head Officer (SHO) Vishwajith, Circle Inspector (CI) Syam Kumar, Grade Sub‑Inspector (SI) Manoj, and Chief Police Officer (CPO) Arunajith. The suspensions were announced after Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala informed the Kerala Legislative Assembly that police negligence had occurred. The Home Minister also stated that the police had visited the home of the deceased, Jayabalakrishnan, and assured the family that strong action would be taken. The incident prompted the police to file a petition in the Ernakulam Sessions Court after a 17‑year‑old suspect was charged with murder and taken into custody. The Juvenile Justice Board had previously granted bail to the suspect, a decision that the police challenged. The police argued that releasing the suspect’s father, a judge, on bail would send a wrong message to society. After the suspect’s arrest, the judge’s son was released on bail. The judge’s father was brought to the police station to provide information. The judge said that his son had driven the vehicle without his knowledge and that the police could not record his statement without permission. The police said they would obtain the necessary permission before recording the judge’s statement. The judge’s presence at the station was reported to have caused disrespect towards the judiciary. The Chief Justice and the High Court disciplinary committee have been notified of the incident. They will review the report and decide on any disciplinary action against the judge.
