The French Interior Ministry announced that it had arrested roughly 1,000 people during Saturday’s protests, which took place in several cities across the country. The demonstrations were sparked by rising living costs and fuel prices, and some gatherings escalated into clashes with police. Interior Minister Laurent Nunoiz said the number of arrests was likely to increase after police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Nantes. He added that the use of these measures had intensified the confrontations. According to the Ministry, about 410,000 people participated in the nationwide protests. The General Confederation of Labour (CGT), one of the main organisers, estimated that around 800,000 people took part. In Paris, police counted approximately 110,000 demonstrators, while the union estimated the figure at 250,000. At the end of a march in the capital, a group of young men smashed the windows of a car showroom on Rue du Cours de Vannes. Riot police pursued them, deploying tear gas. Protesters also threw projectiles at police officers and erected temporary barricades on the streets.
