On 25 October, LDP Diet Committee Chairman Hideki Murai appeared on an NHK program to discuss a consumption‑tax reduction bill that would lower the tax on food and beverage items. Murai noted that the bill faces a minority status in the House of Councillors and said the party intends to secure its passage with the support of opposition parties. “We will try to get as many people to understand as possible,” he said. Opposition Diet Committee Chairman Motohisa Kurokawa of the Democratic Party of Japan cautioned that, even if the lower house holds an overwhelming majority, an overly aggressive approach could still influence the upper house. Kurokawa urged a careful and thorough debate on the proposal.
