Bangladesh secured its first gold medal at the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) during the 23rd edition held in West Java, Indonesia, from 2 to 7 October 2024. Sixteen Bangladeshi participants entered the competition, and 15 of them won medals – one gold, seven silver and seven bronze – placing Bangladesh sixth among 23 participating countries. The gold medal was won by Tahmid Hasan, a sixth‑grade student from Manarat International School and College in Dhaka. Hasan excelled in the theoretical part of the science section, achieving the fifth‑highest score among all competitors. “I came with the desire to win a gold medal. I made some simple mistakes in Theory‑2, which worried me a bit, but the practical part compensated for it. I am very happy to receive the gold,” he said. Hasan also expressed a wish to improve his mathematics and hopes to study at one of the world’s top ten universities. In the science section, Bangladesh earned four silver medals and two bronze medals. Silver medalists were Abijon Ray Goshal, Mohammad Musharif Alam, Ryan Afraad and Arham Abid. Bronze medals went to Rafsan Shafik Talukdar and Saheb Ibn Kabir. The youngest participants were fourth‑grade students Musharif and Ryan. Another student, Mohammad Miftahul Islam, missed a bronze medal by a margin of 1.25 points. All eight members of the mathematics team won medals: three silver and five bronze. The highest scorer was Arijit Saha. Silver medals were awarded to Ihan Abrar Rahman and Mohammad Samin Saif, while bronze medals went to Mohammad Nabi Hossain, Ali Omar, Sharaf Bin Anwar, Mohammad Shahid Morsalin and Irtish Zayed Liam. All eight students attended St. Joseph Higher Secondary School in Dhaka. Arijit said, “My preparation was good, and I expected a gold medal, but neither the short nor the composition met my expectations, although the exploration part was strong.” He plans to prepare for the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and hopes to pursue higher studies in mathematics and physics. Bangladesh’s journey at the IMSO began last year at the 22nd edition in Kedah, Malaysia, where 12 participants all won medals – two silver and ten bronze. The 2024 edition saw the team size increase to 16 participants, with 15 medalists and the historic first gold medal. Team leader Tanvirul Islam, science coach Maimun Naz Rahman and mathematics coach Samira Sumaiya congratulated the students. Coach Rahman noted, “The first time we participated, we
