After the state elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) announced that it has become the new national party in Germany, according to co‑chairwoman Alice Waidel.
Waidel, who co‑chairs the far‑right party, called Chancellor Friedrich Merkel “weak” and demanded that he resign. “It is clear that AfD is the new national party in Germany. We have surpassed the CDU; the people want political change,” she said.
The statement was made following the results of the elections, which the AfD claimed had increased its support relative to the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The party’s leadership has positioned itself as a major force in German politics, challenging the long‑standing dominance of the CDU.
