Al-Jazira State Governor Al-Tahir Ibrahim Al-Khair conducted a field visit to the wholesale market in Wad Madani to address rising commodity prices. The visit, which included representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Trade, the Military Cooperative, and local chambers of commerce, aimed to stabilize the cost of living for residents.
Following the intervention, the price of a 50-kilogram bag of sugar reportedly decreased from 410,000 Sudanese pounds to 360,000 Sudanese pounds. The governor’s office characterized the move as a signal that the state is actively monitoring market conditions to prevent price gouging.
The initiative has prompted calls for a broader strategy to protect low-income residents. Observers noted that while the price reduction is a positive development, long-term stability requires consistent oversight, the establishment of mobile sales outlets for rural areas, and the implementation of sustainable economic policies. Recommendations for further action include reviewing past successful discount sales programs, such as those previously held at the Al-Jazira Club, and ensuring government spending is strictly managed.
Additionally, residents have raised concerns regarding the lack of regulation in the local transportation sector. Reports indicate that fares for public transport, including rickshaws and Amjad vehicles, remain unregulated, leading to high costs for commuters. There are ongoing calls for the state government, local authorities, and transport unions to establish and enforce official fare schedules to alleviate the financial burden on the public.
