बढ्यो तिहारमा कारोबार

Saptari, November 8 The arrival of Tihar has led to a significant increase in commercial activity across Saptari district. Markets in Rajbiraj, the district headquarters, as well as Bodebarsain, Kalyanpur, Kanchanpur, Hanumannagar, and Fattepur, have seen a surge in consumer traffic, boosting sales of goods ranging from daily essentials to precious metals. Local traders report a high demand for items such as brooms, salt, turmeric, coriander, and metal utensils made of copper and brass. This trend is driven by cultural and religious beliefs, particularly the tradition of Dhanteras, where purchasing new metal items is considered auspicious, and bringing items like brooms, salt, and spices into the home is believed to invite prosperity. Rajbiraj-based businessman Baijnath Sah noted that the volume of trade has increased significantly during the festival period. Local shopkeeper Manju Kumari added that while residents often travel to nearby Indian border markets like Kunauli, Bhimnagar, Birpur, and Laukahi for routine shopping, they have largely opted to purchase their Tihar-related goods within the district this year. Gold and silver shops have also experienced heavy footfall. Jeweler Shatrughna Gupta stated that the demand has been high, with customers purchasing gold ranging from small quantities to two tolas, with the majority opting for two to four annas of gold. The increased activity has also brought challenges. The influx of shoppers, pedestrians, and vehicles—including city rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, and motorcycles—has caused traffic congestion on the main roads of Rajbiraj, complicating local mobility. Some consumers have raised concerns regarding price fluctuations. Resident Baualal Yadav expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of uniform pricing and called for regular market monitoring to protect consumers from potential overcharging. In response, Chief District Officer Shyam Krishna Thapa stated that the administration has conducted several market inspections across the district in the lead-up to the festival. He emphasized that these efforts are aimed at protecting consumer interests and curbing irregularities in the market. Local business owners have welcomed the shift in consumer behavior, noting that the increased reliance on local markets during the festival provides a vital boost to the district’s economy. However, there remains a call for more effective traffic management and consistent market oversight to ensure the festive period remains orderly and fair for all.
