العاصفة التصعيدية إلى اشتداد تمهيداً لإعادة انتشار… اتّجاه لفصل الديبلوماسي عن العسكري في المفاوضات

**Escalation in Southern Lebanon Raises Concerns Over Possible Expansion of Israeli Operations**

*By the Lebanese Press Service – 8 September 2026*

For the past four days, southern Lebanon has witnessed a steady rise in hostilities. The conflict, which began after Israel declared operational control of the hills of Al‑Ali Thaher, has intensified to the point that officials and observers fear the entire Nabatieh region could face a similar fate.

### Growing Threat to Nabatieh

The “mini‑war” that has unfolded since the Israeli takeover of Al‑Ali Thaher has involved clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, with the latter’s response marked by intense violence that has caused numerous civilian casualties and injuries. While the initial focus was on the hills, reports indicate that the conflict is spreading to the broader Nabatieh area, raising alarm among Lebanese officials and residents.

### Rumors of a “Gray Zone” Expansion

Unverified reports have circulated that Israeli troops may be moving into a “gray zone” extending up to four kilometres from the Lebanon‑Israel border. The term “gray zone” refers to a strip of land that is not officially under Israeli control but is heavily monitored. The possibility of such an expansion has heightened fears that Israel could be preparing for a broader military campaign aimed at dismantling Hezbollah’s infrastructure.

### Impact on Negotiations

The escalating violence has cast doubt on the prospects for renewed diplomatic talks. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has warned that the bloodshed could be an Israeli attempt to undermine the framework agreement and derail the negotiation process.

In the meantime, the Central News Agency reported that Israeli officials have expressed readiness to convene the eighth round of negotiations after the Jewish New Year, scheduled for 11 September. According to the report, the political and military delegations will operate separately:

* **Political delegation** – Expected to meet in Rome or, more likely, in Jordan on 14–15 September, given the proximity to Lebanon and Israel.
* **Military delegation** – Scheduled to convene at the U.S. Central Command headquarters in Tampa, Florida.

Israeli prisoner‑and‑missing‑person official Gal Hirsch is slated to attend the political delegation. His participation follows a successful effort by U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa, who persuaded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to release a number of non‑combatant prisoners. Issa’s visit to Israel is said to have accelerated the scheduling of the new negotiation round.

### Current Situation

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing clashes and a growing number of civilian casualties. Lebanese authorities continue to monitor the developments closely, while international observers call for restraint and a return to diplomatic engagement.
