Australia announced on Saturday that it will tighten enforcement of visa expiration rules, aiming to curb the number of visitors who remain on the island nation after their visas have lapsed.
The government said it will increase the use of administrative detention for individuals who stay beyond the period granted by their visas.
According to the announcement, more than 77,000 people are currently in visa‑overstay status in Australia.
